The Chaves spa: I - tectonic and lithostratigraphic framework for the physical and chemical modelling of the hydrothermal system
Resumo
The hydromineral province with sodium bicarbonated and CO2 rich waters
shaped on the geotectonic zone of Galicia-Trás-os-Montes is expressed in douzains
of sites, 18 of them in Portugal. There, the Chaves spa stands for its maxima on
discharge rates, temperatures, fluor and silica. Its clear dependence on Neotectonics
is expressed by the associated graben, which is dimensioned of 30 km2, shaped as
a rectangular alveolus that subsided a minimum of 250 m since the lower Miocene.
The exsurgencies prefer the western margin of this one and also o f similarly
associated grabens. Any other central exsurgencies on the floor of the graben would
be limited to be shown as hydrochemical or geothermal anomalies. The eastern
border of the graben, with its recently shaped scarp, does not show any hydrothermal
exsurgency.
It is to be remarked that the effective, the historical and the prospective
discharge spots extend along a belt of 5 km over the western margin of a NNE
elongated subsidence cell, whose SW vertex, on the Tabolado o f Chaves, helds
the major discharge plume. To this vertex converge discrete tectonic faults trending
NNE, ENE, NW, NNW.
As for the lithogeochemistry that is considered to support the hydrochemical
system are here reported, both in cropping massifs and in the telescoped bedrock
of the graben a) five Silurian metassedimentary units, comprehending significant
quartzites and carbonaceous slates and b) hercynian granitoids. The mineralogical
assemblages found in a) and b) are adequate for the water-rock reactions that should
be considered to free the chemical species dissolved in the mineral waters.
As for the Ceno-Anthropozoic cover, its lenticular bodies o f terrigenous
sediments, from clays to gravels, are envisaged for their origin, tectonic markers, and aquifer capabilities. The volume of the graben terrigenous aquifer is apt to
function as a reservoir with 400x106 m3 of water. This could sustain a recharge
lasting for some centuries.
