The suburban domus in the ancient Hernan Cortés quarter (Mérida, Badajoz): an example of Late Antique residencial architecture
Resumo
The discovery of an aristocratic building, dating from the V‑VI century, in the place of ancient “Cuartel de Hernán Cortés” (Mérida), provides a new piece in the urban puzzle of this city during the Late Antiquity. We don’t know exactly the status of its owner, but it’s probable that he was a public figure of Emeritensis elite during this period. The residence keeps the classical roman plan, with the proper noble rooms, as the atrium for the visitor’s reception, the tablinum for the negotiations and deals, and the baths as symbol of prestige, besides the hygienic use.
