From myth to tragedy: an interpretation of Francisco Dias’ Iphigeneia (1798)
Resumo
“Iphigeneia; taken from Greek history” (1798), a tragedy by Francisco
Dias, goes back, inside Portuguese dramaturgy of the 18th century, to one of the last
Euripidean tragedies performed in Athens (c. 407-406 BC), after its authors’ death.
This article focuses on the rewriting process and the myth’s adaptation of Francisco
Dias’ Iphigeneia, considering the aesthetic principles of Portuguese Arcadia, inside the
historical-dramaturgical context of the second half of the 18th century.
metade do século XVIII.
