Journalists fake news: training in social and human sciences as verification strategy
Resumo
In a scenario of exponential growth of the information available, particularly
online and specifically in social media, we highlight the need to be able to gauge its
truth. If this is a crucial task for citizens, it is even more so for journalists, who increasingly
use social media as sources of information and find themselves struggling with the new
task of reporting false news published by other means (journalistic means or otherwise).
In this rapidly changing environment, we argue that, without neglecting the more or less
automated verification mechanisms that emerge and which journalists can use, the prior
knowledge of professionals, especially in the fields of Social and Human Sciences, becomes
relevant. A privileged context to acquire this type of knowledge is the training in journalism
that is offered by the higher education programmes in the area, so these contents should be
present in study plans and teaching strategies.
