Since it does not seem useful at this point to attempt to elaborate a synopsis
of a set of essays concerning a literary corpus that is very heterogeneous, both chronologically
and geographically (and because individual synopses are included in the Introduction),
one may presume that, in lieu of a general summary, it will probably be more helpful
to emphasize the unifying component of this book.
The main purpose of this collection of essays is to bring to the fore multiple possibilities
of literary criticism generated by a theoretical approach that is centered on the construction
of emotions in literature. Such an approach makes possible, on the one hand, the close
reading of emotional, aesthetic, narrative, ethical, and ideological devices perceived in the
literary texts scrutinized herein and, on the other hand, the identification and characterization of the potential effects of these devices on those emotionally engaged in the act of
reading these same texts.
