According to the Dialogical Self Theory, the self is composed by a community of
I-positions that give voice to different perspectives which cooperate in order to co-
-construct and continuously update the meaning of life and identity. Conjugality
is a central dimension in the relational world and identity of every human being.
The couple works as a micro-society, dealing with several and diverse expectations,
constraints and demands. The management abilities developed within this
domain of human experience became evident in the proactive role performed by
the Relational I-position in the internal dynamics of the self-system. In order to
empirically explore the dialogical self-system organization we have developed an
interview that allows us to access the I-positions repertoire (Dialogical Articulation
Task, DAT) and we analyzed the intrapersonal dynamics in three different moments
of the couple’s life cycle.
