This study aims to develop a description and analysis of concepts and practices
concerning what it is ‘To Be a University Teacher’ and also to identify
the main indicators on the topic.
Theoretical considerations are centred on the multiple functions of a university
teacher, which involve teaching but also research and management activities,
and on the complexity of the teaching activity, including beliefs, intentions
and teaching and learning practices. A script concerning a semi-structured
interview was developed, focusing on key issues including the characterization
of pathways and functions of university teachers, the concepts, intentions and
practices of college teaching, the positive and negative aspects of the implementation
of the Bologna reform, and the models of training and suggestions
for professional development of academics. Based on content analysis of the
data a set of subcategories and indicators was identified and established.
Despite the exploratory nature of the study, it aims to be a contribution to
the characterization and analysis of the subject and will provide a conceptual
framework for further systematic research on this matter.
