Portuguese overseas and immigration in the 1950s and 1960s: motives and homesickness of a family group
Resumo
Portuguese emigration to Brazil has changed a lot from the mid-19th
century to the 1950s. Political, social and economic unrest greatly intensified in
Portugal, in the 1950s and 1960s, with the consequent emigration of the Portuguese,
crossing the Atlantic and settling in Brazil in search of prosperity and a new lifestyle.
The above historical aspects enhanced the ways Portuguese currently feel and
react within the context of either maintaining their costumes and traditions or in
their denial, through the appropriation of homesickness and culture for culinary
activities or shunning their past even within the food context. It is highly relevant
to understand the symbolism and memories on food in the life of a Portuguese
family living in Curitiba. Studies on first generation Portuguese group in Curitiba
are focused through a qualitative research, and which directly or in an aggregate
way they started to belong to the analyzed group.
