An appropriate evaluation of the passages from Diogenes Laertius dealing
with the Magi, the Medes and the Persians must pay attention to what is known about
the ‘other side’ of the historical-cultural ‘barrier’ of the East Mediterranean. Philosophy
emerged from ideas circulating in Asia Minor while powerful Iranian kingdoms were
expanding towards that region, and from the developments that those ideas provoked
in the Greek Peninsula and Magna Graecia, and the construction of Greek identity in
great part has occurred in contrast with the real or fictitious identity of their neighbours
from the eastern Iranian lands. The way Diogenes Laertius used the material he gathered
about the Persians shows him inserted in an ancient tradition of ‘strangeness’ or aversion
towards those neighbours, but this fact has not prevented him from registering precious
informations that deserve to be analysed in the light of contemporary historiography
and cultural anthropology. We have conducted an investigation on some sources and
facts reported by Diogenes Laertius about the Persians (confounded with the Medes)
and the Magi, seen as an example of alien wise men or of embracers of exotic forms of
cult and customs. We have tried to identify some essencial problems and, as much as
possible, to circumvent them through the study of sources not mentioned by our author, including texts that registrate the Iranian traditions in their own view, in a way that the
importance of the knowledge of the Laertian text to the study of West-East relations
is revealed.
A filosofia surgiu a
terras iranianas do Oriente.
