Leon Battista Alberti articulated an architectural concept that makes clear the distinction between the artist and the craftsman. He clarified that the essential work of the architect focuses on the architectural design, that is an intellectual work. This notion was part of the history of architecture for five centuries. In contrast, Walter Groupius put the teaching of architecture in terms of manuality
of the craftsman, intending to break with the basic statement of modern architecture established by the humanists of the early Renaissance. This contradiction that the 20th century would not overcome and the idea about the qualities necessary to the architect presents now divided, ranging from advocates of artistic ability and those who claim expertise.
