Iter populo debetur: road network and legislation in the roman empire
Resumo
The Roman road network, quite impressive in its size and the magnitude
of the maintenance that it required, is rarely associated with written technical evidence.
This obliges us to call on archaeology to remedy this striking information gap.
A different situation characterizes the study of road legislation from the available juridical,
literary, and epigraphic sources. These attestations elucidate the road network,
including its public and private facets, clearly exemplifying an essential trait of Roman
civilization, the use of law on behalf of the community.
