This paper aims to give a global perspective of the colonisation process in
ancient Greece: how it began, its different phases, and its peculiarities, which accord
with the phases of colonisation and with the ‘metropoleis’ from which colonisers came.
The ties between the metropolis and the new polis were determinant for the organisation
of the colony, its laws, its gods, and its expectation of protection by the mother-city.
The principle of reciprocity led to the creation of alliances in order to maintain dominion
over the sea, which had consequences that history came to demonstrate.
