Travelling in the first Roman novels: a female perspective
Resumo
Motivated by curiosity, will of evasion or of knowledge, there is a certain
mysticism around the first Latin novels. In these novels, travel, mobility, nautical
adventures, shipwreck, piracy, encounters and disagreements, are the most common
topoi. The subject of female mobility in antiquity, be it physical, social, cultural, or
political, keeps being a fragile issue. What we intend, in the first place, is to talk
about the physical mobility of women. Then, we will go on to confront some practical
cases and discuss how travel is approached in such a different way from a narrative
to another. Exposing differences in tone, gravity, and sub-subjects under the broader
category of traveling, this confrontation reveals that female mobility is a phenomenon
that remains of interest nowadays, as does mobility from a female perspective.
latinas. Nelas, a viagem, a mobilidade, a aventura náutica, o naufrágio, a pirataria, e
perspectiva feminina.
