Causes of an unhappy love: Phaedra’s age and Hippolytus’ beauty
Resumo
The comparative analysis of fifty versions of the theme of failed love
affair between Phaedra and Hippolytus brings us to the great importance of two
aspects to whom usually pay little attention philological research of traditional type:
the age of Phaedra and the beauty of Hippolytus. Our study supports the conclusion
that these two particulars, ie the age of Phaedra, which seems to be closer to the age
of the young Hippolytus than to that of her husband Theseus, and the striking beauty
of Hippolytus, were two decisive elements to turn into a terrible tragedy which could
have been a beautiful love story.
O nosso estudo permite
