In the Poenulus of Plautus we find implicit or explicit references to the
Punic Wars and other conflicts relating to Greece and Eastern Mediterranean. The
historical events mirrored in the play enable us to realize how Plautus uses arguments
of contemporary politics in the captatio of the audience, and how the playwright’s
spectators would understand the Roman foreign policy. Surprisingly in a play represented
within the time of Hannibal’s life, the Carthaginian Hanno is not merely
dealt with clichés associated by the Romans to Carthaginians, but proves to be a
significantly more complex character.
