Flow, hubs, network and urban influence: the example of the Civitas Igaeditanorum
Resumo
Contrary to a traditionally separate approach, this paper aims at combining
the historic methodology with the geographer’s point of view. Indeed, the use of
geographic tools such as mapping casts a new light on the historic analysis of Roman
Lusitania. Mapping the material and human exchanges between the civitates of the
provincia is the better way, first to identify and assess their relationships; second, to
draw from exchanges flows; and finally to outline their respective area of influence
and identify their role in the creation of possible networks. The case study of civitas
Igaeditanorum is a good opportunity to explore an interior city, outstanding in many
ways. The data can be cross-analysed thanks to different multiscalar maps. They show
relationships between the hubs, different from their juridical statute: first by their
attraction capacity, and then by their ability to influence the surrounding spaces at the same time. In that way appears a new network of relationships inside the young
Roman Lusitania.
