The significance of the image of primordial water in Pindar’s Nemea VIII
Resumo
The theme of primordial water is linked to the intentions of lyric poets when presenting cosmogonist stories. In this way, the image of water, in all its magnitude, can acquire the value of a universal symbol, linked to the deepest structures of lyric creation. This symbol may be interpreted independently of the contexts in which it appears, and the same significance can be attributed in all cases. The study
of primordial water in Pindar´s Nemea VIII corresponds to a cosmogony that is expressed by the image of a liquid in such a potent way, within the lyrical tradition of the epinikia, that it can influence or contaminate other primitively different images.
