Urban Archaeology in Rio de Janeiro downtown: the Assembleia site, 18th century
Resumo
Preventive archaeological research at a site located in Rio de Janeiro’s
downtown, on Rua da Assembleia, revealed a stone water well and a dense accumulation
of waste material discarded nearby, dating from the end of the seventeenth
century and the first half of the eighteenth century. Four buildings were constructed
on top of this waste dump in the second half of the century after the area had been
divided into four different plots. Assuming that collecting waste and fetching water
were tasks performed by urban slaves, the site was interpreted as a meeting point
of captives involved in this work during the early periods of its occupation, prior to
the ground being built over. Functioning as an introduction to the subsequent texts,
this article briefly presents the main findings and their interpretation.
datados do final do século XVII e primeira metade do XVIII.
