Solon – Publicola: the political sage and the sagacious politician
Resumo
Throughout the Lives of Solon and Publicola, Plutarch establishes a
close comparison between the two main characters. He focuses on virtues such as
moderation, justice and detachment towards wealth — all of which were preeminent
in both characters, who applied them to their political and legislative activity —, and
concludes with some thoughts on their wisdom and happiness. This paper studies the
passages that provide such comparisons and analyzes their outreach as to become
paradigms for statesmen in Plutarch’s own time.
