Platonic communitarism: Republic and natural right
Resumo
This paper claims that Plato’s Republic does not present a theory of natural
right, but rather a defense of communitarianism. It introduces the general outlines of
the modern natural right theory, opposing them to the ancient teleological explanations.
In its central section, it addresses the three passages considered to be arguments in defense
of natural right: Glaucon’s challenge; the foundation of the city and the normative
function of the good. The analyzes attest that these arguments do not correspond to
the basic pattern of modern natural right, and that they instead fit much better to what
is called today a communitarian approach. In its last part, the paper shows how some
problems ascribed to communitarian theories can also be assigned to the Republic.
Ele introduz as diretrizes
normativa do bem.
