The most recent studies about ancient Greek tragedy link the dionisiac to the patterns
of tragic action and to its political references. In the extant Attic tragedy, Thebes is the most
important city in the repetition of these patterns. Starting fom a reading of Euripides’ Heracles,
this article analyses the repetition of these patterns and their resolution.
