The “Sertão” beyond “Sertão”: anthropology of the traveling man: a reading of the Grande Sertão: Veredas by João Guimarães Rosa
Resumo
The journey of Riobaldo Tatarana in João Guimarães Rosa’s Grande
Sertão: Veredas is, above all, an inside journey across the paths and deadlocks in
which the events, implicated in the construction of the character himself, are interwoven.
Amongst meetings, disagreements and wandering drifts that successively
happen, the challenges - involved in the construction of the person that Riobaldo
will later become - are outlined. In the backstage of his history, an anthropology will
gradually and subliminally come into existence. In this process, the “sertão” is the
scenario in which the plot develops, but is also a partner, the alter ego, and, finally, the
inner territory that is to be crossed as in a rite of many passages.
